BACHELOR OF COMMERCE HONOURS (ECONOMICS)

Offering Type : Day
Full time Offering to be completed over a year subject to the availability of relevant staff members. Part time offering is for students who are working. Academic activities to be completed over a period of two years and attending classes.
Overall Purpose of the Qualification
The aim of the qualification is to develop the applied competence of the students on an advanced level in the acquisition, analysis, interpretation and application of economic principles and methods.
The programme will prepare students to reflect on their own economical applications to assess the effect thereof in the context of Economics as a social science and prepare them for further study in Economics as a Science.
Entrance Requirements
Students taking Honours courses in Economics will be expected to grasp work, normally demanding proficiency in Mathematics at Matriculation higher level.
An average of 60% or above in Economics 111 in B Com or B degree.
A pass in Econometrics undergraduate.
On its own discretion, the department may consider students who do not obtain the required minimum.
Recognition of Prior Learning is given priority
Prior learning shall be recognized subject to the requirements of each programme as per WSU’s Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (RPL).
Entry Points
A B Com or B degree from any recognized institution.
Specific Exit Level Outcomes
On completion, learners may practice as professional Economists, Academics or Analysts in private or public sectors. Should be able to contribute or influence the policy making process in general in the economy.
Assignment of Credits The course consists of: a weekly seminar on Contemporary Economic Issues a maximum of 120 credits. a project paper or mini-dissertation is compulsory.

Integrated Assessment
Forms Of Assessment Related To The Overall Purpose
On-going assessment will be conducted by means of assignment, tests, seminar presentations and projects.
Forms Of Assessment Related To Specific Outcomes
Written examinations, moderated by external examiners and submitted to professional bodies for approval where necessary.
Articulation
Qualifying students will be able to continue, at other accredited institutions, with the M Com programme.
Criteria for the Registration of Assessors
All assessors must be in possession of at least a Master’s degree and also be registered with relevant professional associations.
Moderation
External examiners who are experts in their relevant fields will be appointed.
