DEAN’S ACADEMIC AWARDS YIELD IMPRESSIVE RESULTS FOR WSU’S KOMANI CAMPUS

The Komani Campus held the second Annual Dean’s Academic Excellence awards in September in honour of final year students who obtained the highest average throughout the course of their undergraduate studies.

25 students from the Faculty of Economics and Information Systems, as well as the faculty of Education and School Development were awarded by the campus at the ceremony held at the Whittlesea delivery site.

It was reported that since their 2021 inception, the awards have seen a great improvement in student’s academic performance, with some awardees receiving averages of over close to 20 distinctions by their final undergraduate year.

Komani Campus Rector, Dr Pretty Mpiti commended staff and students for their collective hard work, and upholding the university’s slogan, In pursuit of excellence.

“The hard work we’ve seen in our students has inspired us to start this initiative. What we have noticed is that they have performed better than the previous year, since we started awards last year,” said Mpiti.

Amongst the awardees was final year Internal Auditing student, Liyabona Tube, who walked away with three awards; namely, first place in Diploma: Internal Auditing, Overall Achiever in the Faculty of Economics, and Information Systems, as well as the overall academic achievement award for the entire campus.

“I am so excited and encouraged by the recognition I received at these awards. Putting in the work in my studies, especially while studying through the stringent conditions of Covid-19 and lockdown, was not easy, but the hard work has paid off,” said Tube.

The Faculty of Economics and Information Systems (FEIS) vowed to assist Tube to register for the student division of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

FEIS Acting HoD, Taruvingwa Mavenyengwa said that this step would expose the student to the institute’s code of ethics, publications and give her networking opportunities which will pave a bright path for her professionally.

Acting Campus rector said that she encouraged other faculties within the university to institute initiatives like the Dean’s Awards as they would improve morale amongst staff and students, while pursuing the university’s new vision and mission.
