THREE FINAL-YEAR IT STUDENTS ARE DEVELOPING AN APP TO REMOVE BARRIERS BETWEEN GRADUATES AND JOB-CENTERED ALUMNI ACCESS
The persistent issues of unemployment and poverty affecting university graduates have motivated three WSU IT students to develop a software application aimed at alleviating this detrimental phenomenon.
Under the guidance of their lecturer, Prof. Eyono Obono, the trio of Xola Mcanjana, Anganathi Ndanda, and Ayabulela Booysen has been diligently working in the Department of Business Applications Development to create an app they call "Alumni Bridge."
“This software app aims to connect students, alumni, educational institutions, and employers. It will foster interaction, primarily between alumni and university students. This connection will allow alumni to share their career paths with students, facilitating valuable insights and guidance."
Mcanjana explained that the main purpose of creating the app was to highlight the group's innovative and solution-oriented approach to bridging the gap between current WSU students and industry professionals who can provide access to opportunities.
Ndanda stated, "We must connect today's students with the trailblazers who came before them by blending technology with the strength of community, thereby creating a vibrant environment for mentorship."
He stated that the goal is to inspire, guide, and empower the next generation by providing open and transparent access to alumni, who are an integral part of the vast economic ecosystem.
Prof. Obono expressed his joy and satisfaction with the app, which he significantly contributed to as a mentor.
"I didn't hesitate for a moment when this team presented their app idea focused on using alumni networks to identify employment and self-employment opportunities. The concept was well thought out, especially considering the current challenges facing the country," he said.
Booysen, the third student, expressed his strong belief that the Alumni Bridge app, unlike other existing generic platforms, will connect individuals from similar academic and socio-economic backgrounds. This approach aims to create a stronger network of ties, increasing the likelihood of successful placement opportunities.
