WALTER SISULU UNIVERSITY SECURES TOP FIVE SPOT IN SA’S 2025 IMPACT RANKINGS
Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has achieved a historic milestone by being ranked 5th in South Africa in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025.
This recognition places WSU among the most influential institutions in the country when it comes to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as ranked.
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings evaluate universities across the globe based on their contributions to sustainability, social equity, inclusive development, innovation, and community engagement.
In the 2025 edition, more than 2,500 universities from 130 countries and territories were assessed, making this achievement a significant marker of WSU’s growing global presence and institutional progress as it was evaluated along with 23 Universities in SA.
Commenting on the ranking, WSU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca, said this was a remarkable achievement and a testament to the unwavering dedication, hard work, and resilience of the entire WSU community — from academic and support staff to our students, researchers, and partners.
“Being ranked 5th in South Africa by the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings confirms that we are not only fulfilling our academic mandate but are also making a meaningful and measurable contribution to sustainable development at both local and global levels,” she said.
She added that the outcome affirms the bold steps WSU has taken to align its teaching, research, innovation, and partnerships with the Sustainable Development Goals. It is the result of years of effort, institutional reform, and a culture of excellence that continues to grow.
“It is also a powerful reflection of our strategic vision — to be a technology-infused African university that is responsive to societal needs and known for producing graduates who are ethical, innovative, and socially conscious. This recognition is not just an accolade; it is a call to continue striving for impact, relevance, and transformation,” she added.
This latest ranking is a reflection of WSU’s deep-rooted commitment to shaping a better, more equitable future — not only through academic excellence but through action-oriented strategies that make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities.
From research addressing real-world problems to student-led community projects, WSU continues to demonstrate that a university can be both a centre of knowledge and a force for transformation.
WSU’s placement in the top five in South Africa reaffirms the institution’s role as a key player in higher education and sustainable development. The ranking highlights the university’s notable progress.
