WSU DRAMA SOCIETY SHINES AT 2025 NATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL
The WSU Drama Society once again showcased its incredible talent at the prestigious National Arts Festival, taking place in Makanda recently.
The group delivered outstanding performances at the Monument Building Rehearsal Room for three consecutive days, from June 27 to June 29, captivating audiences with a compelling storyline.
Under the direction of Malwande Menzile, the society presented a powerful and emotional piece titled "My Long-Lost Father." This deeply authentic tale follows a young man in search of his roots after growing up as an orphan.
“Born from a one-night encounter between Patrick, a miner from Welkom, and Mavis, David was given away due to the poverty of the two strangers," explained Menzile.
The director expressed his pride in the students’ performances, describing their three-day tour in Makanda as an "astonishing" exhibition of talent.
He emphasized how moving and inspiring it was to witness the profound connection the play had with the audience.
WSU student Ndumiso Gumede, who performed in the play, mentioned that the most enjoyable part of the experience was the preparation and the collaborative process with his fellow actors.
"I really enjoyed telling a story that many people can relate to; it gave me a thrill and motivated me to push even harder. I played several roles: I was one of the uncles in the village of Kwantu, named Bhungane, and I also took on the roles of one of the main singers and main dancers, as well as portraying a mine worker," said Gumede.
Another standout performer was third-year ICT student Nokwanda Maqungo, who brought life to Menzile's vision by portraying Thandizile, the prodigal evil stepmother.
"I enjoyed every moment on stage portraying Thandizile. I loved how we showcased our show and how the audience reacted. Watching other artists present their crafts also helped me grow deeper in the art industry," Maqungo said.
She noted that the overall theme of abandonment and the resulting issue of orphans is an important and relevant story to tell in a society that grapples with this challenge on a grand scale.
