WSU MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT WINS TOP AWARD AT SABPP CONFERENCE

WSU has been named the best institution of higher learning in Human Resources Management (HRM) by the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP).

The announcement was made on Wednesday 13 October at the annual SABPP People Factor Conference, a prime gathering of HR professionals across all industries nationally.

The conference aimed to bring new insight to be applied in the current world of work, and also give recognition to those who have adhered to the standards set by SABPP.

WSU was nominated amongst 26 other institutions that offer HRM related training and qualifications. The institution achieved first place after submitting their 2020/2021 curriculum, including learner guides and assessments.

Head of the Department of Management, which hosts HR programmes at WSU’s Ibika Campus, Sindiswa Mdindela-Majova accepted the award on behalf of the institution.

“To me this achievement is a testimony that we are responding to our institution’s slogan which says “In pursuit of excellence.” I am certain that the WSU community and our new Vice-Chancellor are proud to hear these news because we are bringing her vision to life,” said an elated Mdindela-Majova.

This is not the first time the department has won an accolade for their outstanding work and commitment to efficient standards of practice. In 2019, Genevieve McGowan, then a third-year student from the department, came first place in the SABPP National Top Student Recognition Awards.

Mdindela-Majova attributes the department’s successes to the passion and commitment of the WSU leadership, staff and students.

“When you are led by people who are passionate and committed, like our Acting Dean Mr. Panicker, and Acting Campus Rector Dr. Nguza-Mduba, as well as dedicated colleagues in all four campuses, one can achieve targets that are set high and excel. Nothing just happens, institutions are not changed by intentions but by actions and that’s what we’ve done as a department,” she said.

Acting campus rector for the Butterworth Campus, Dr. Bulelwa Nguza-Mduba sang the department’s praises, whilst emphasizing the significance of their achievement.

“I'd like to congratulate the department on this outstanding achievement. Walter Sisulu University was thrust into the national spotlight as a result of this.”

“I recognise and appreciate the hard work and unwavering commitment of the department's HoD, Mrs. Mdindela-Majova, and the entire academics and support staff. We have demonstrated that nothing can stop us from achieving greater things,” said Nguza-Mduba.
