WSU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Rushiella Songca, on Friday evening brought together the WSU community at the Buffalo Club in East London to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the All Blacks Rugby team who soared to the semi-finals of the Varsity Shield tournament.
The celebration saw esteemed guests in attendance, including officials from the WSU VC Office, WSU Sports Department, representatives from Border Rugby, as well as Mr. Thobile Mtya from Springbok legends.
Representing WSU Vice-Chancellor, Director of Special Projects in the VC’s office, Ndiyakholwa Ngqulu, emphasized Prof. Songca's unwavering support for the team.
Encouraging the players, Ngqulu urged the them to elevate their efforts, treating each game as though it were their last, given the ample opportunities to advance to the finals.
“As we now end the season, you need to go back to your club house and remind yourselves you are the champions, and a team that can claim that varsity shield next year,” he said.
He added that setting the target of reaching the semi-finals in February was a misstep, advocating instead for a focus on winning next season and bringing the trophy home, as failing to do so would take a two-year effort to rebuild a solid squad.
He further said that Prof Songca was not able to attend as she was travelling to Sudan and celebrations could be further postponed due to the upcoming examinations.
During the event, players were also reminded of the importance of academic pursuits alongside sporting endeavors. He also remarked that over 70% of WSU rugby players have successfully graduated.
WSU Director of Sports Dr. Rendani Mulaudzi motivated the players that it was a tough season, however, they managed to reach the semi-finals.
“All I can advise now is that success is not an accident, but hard work and perseverance and love of what you do,” he said.
Acknowledging the tireless efforts of players and coaches, VC prepared gifts that were distributed during the celebration.
Both the head coach and Varsity Shield Team Captain expressed gratitude for the support throughout the season.
Team captain, Awonke Sondishe, acknowledged the importance of academics and great sportsmanship while head coach, Thembani Mkokeli, highlighted the importance of creating a safe environment which leads to a team functioning well, and how he is big on growth and promised a better team next season.
