Programme Purpose

Entry Requirements

The purpose of the diploma is to offer specialized knowledge and skills that are tailored to respond to the occupational and skills shortages in chemical and chemical-allied industries such as pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, food, mining, petrochemicals, automotive, environmental, wastewater management, pollution control, waste disposal and recycling, agriculture, research, and the health sector. The programmes aim to empower graduates with knowledge to find innovative routes to start-up businesses and develop their business ideas into opportunities that can be exploited by providing a successful product or service in the emerging economy. The purpose of this programme is to produce diversified graduates who can contribute immediately and meaningfully to the human resource needs of the chemical and chemical-allied industries. Successful graduates from the programme can register for an advanced diploma in chemistry, which is a gateway to postgraduate qualifications such as a Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, a Master of Science, and doctoral qualifications. Graduates from the programme can occupy technical positions in chemical and chemical-allied industries such as laboratory technicians, scientists, quality control managers, laboratory managers, or even start their own businesses.

A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a diploma endorsement and with an achievement of in following subjects

·                English at Level 3 [as a Home Language or First Additional Language]

·                Mathematics at Level 3 (not Mathematical Literacy)

·                Physical Science at Level 3

A Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification with a minimum of:

·               E – symbol or (3-4)(HG) in English (Second Language)

·               D – symbol (SG) or (3-4)E – symbol (HG) in Mathematics and

·               D – symbol (SG) or (3-4)E – symbol (HG) in Physical Sciences

·                Applications from international students are considered in terms of institutional equivalence reference document (where required) submission of international qualification to SAQA for benchmarking in terms of HEQF.

·               Mature Refer to requirements as per WSU’s General Rules & Regulations – Section 1.6

·               Prospective students can only be admitted to the programme provide they have achieved an APS score of 23.

NCV-4 from the FETs - Minimum statutory NSC requirements for diploma entry must be met.

·            NB: Only Prospective students with a diploma rating are admitted into the programme.

 

 

Graduate Attributes: Diploma in Analytical Chemistry

 

Graduate Attribute 1:

Apply mathematical, physical and chemical concepts to tasks in the laboratory and production.

Graduate Attribute 2:
Conduct and interpret accurately, wet chemical and instrumental analyses, using prescribed laboratory procedures.

Graduate Attribute 3:
Prepare organic and inorganic compounds using standard synthetic and purification procedures.

Graduate Attribute 4:
Perform calculations to report and evaluate the results of analyses to meet quality assurance and quality control requirements and criteria.

Graduate Attribute 5:
Report and assess results obtained from the analyses and calculations.

Graduate Attribute 6:
Apply computer skills relevant to the chemical laboratory.

Graduate Attribute 7:
Perform relevant Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures to ensure that processes remain within designated limits.

Graduate Attribute 8:
Use interpersonal and communication skills to facilitate team work in the working environment.

Graduate Attribute 9:
Ensure that all assigned work is performed in compliance with relevant occupational health, safety, and environmental laws, legislation and regulations; established policies and procedures; and in accordance with ethical principles.

Apply problem solving skills to problems in the work environment.

Develop a plan for continued professional growth.
