Overview

Welcome to the Department of Networking and IT Support which is located within the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology (FEBEIT).

 

The Department of Networking and IT Support is situated at Buffalo City Campus, we offer accredited qualifications that are specifically aimed at preparing future-ready students for the workplace and as budding entrepreneurs by offering relevant learning and teaching experiences, community outreach and research skills that will enable diplomates and graduates to demonstrate competence, knowledge and judgment in addressing discipline related problems.

We offer undergraduate qualifications at Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels. In addition, we also offer various Short Learning Programmes (SLPs) that include industry-recognized certification programmes/courses. WSU is accredited and affiliated to the CISCO Networking Academy. SLPs provide students and the community access to ICT related knowledge and skills, thus developing talents with practical skills for the ICT industry to meet the skills shortages among the younger generation of the Eastern Cape province.

Vision of the Department

To contribute towards the achievement of local, provincial, and national goals of social and economic upliftment by being a leading provider of expertise in the field of Information and Communication Technologies through research, scholarship, and innovation.

Mission of the Department

To offer relevant, community-focused programmes and research in an innovative, developmental, and accessible learning environment. It also aims at developing highly skilled diplomates and graduates who are employable, entrepreneurial, and who will contribute towards sustainable development of the country.

3.3 Goals of the Department

To continually produce a critical mass of highly skilled ICT graduates through the promotion of scholarship in teaching and learning practices.

To significantly contribute to the empowerment of the community and the society at large through innovation and through conducting and publishing quality applied ICT research.

3.4 Student societies and their roles

The Information Technology Society (ITS) is independently managed by the students with guidance from the SRC and the Department of Networking and IT Support management. The society offers a range of educational activities to its members. The ITS is engaged in community development programmes. These activities enhance leadership and organizational qualities as well as help to unleash other potential talents of students.
