IF YOU CAN DREAM IT, YOU CAN DO IT” - SAYS WSU ALUMNUS ON HER APPOINTMENT TO NEWZROOM AFRIKA

Thabile Makaphela

Walter Sisulu University Broadcasting graduate, Thabile Makapela has encouraged young broadcasting enthusiasts to be persistent in their pursuit of careers in media.

This comes after the Whittlesea born news anchor was appointed as a weather anchor for one of South Africa’s fastest growing news channels, NewzRoom Afrika.

Reflecting on her journey from an aspiring broadcaster to her current position, Makapela recalls, "Well, my journey was an interesting one. I graduated from WSU in 2006. I then went on to do my internship with the SABC in 2008. Being the curious and ambitious person that I am, I somehow heard that they were looking for new presenters for a kids' show called KIDS NEWS. That's when I decided to try my luck."

Through her passion and dedication to her craft, in March 2009 she officially joined SABC as a KID’S NEWS anchor. She stayed for a full seven years, until she was elevated to a prime time weather anchor in 2013. Thabile's determination and unyielding commitment to her dream eventually led her to this remarkable achievement. Her career path serves as an inspiration to young South Africans, especially those aspiring to make their mark in the world of broadcasting. She is a testament to the fact that with dedication and persistence, one can break barriers and reach new heights in their chosen field.

Her appointment as a weather anchor for NewzRoom Afrika is particularly significant, as it not only highlights her individual success but also her representation of isiXhosa news on a growing news platform. This is a step forward in promoting diversity and inclusivity in South African media. “It’s been a beautiful chapter with SABC till I was head hunted by NewzRoom Afrika in December 2022. Being at NewzRoom Africa is so exciting, every bulletin feels like my first, I enjoy my work with everything in me. I passionately deliver with excitement every time I am on air” she said.

Thabile Makapela's story is a unique example for aspiring broadcasters. It highlights the importance of nurturing one's passion, seizing opportunities, and being persistent in the face of challenges. As she continues to rise in her career, Thabile is sure to motivate and guide the next generation of South African journalists, reminding them that with hard work and determination, dreams can indeed become a reality.
