WHAT ARE WSU'S FUNDRAISING NEEDS?
WSU 50 years legacy fund
As we approach the 50th anniversary of Walter Sisulu University's (WSU) establishment in 2026, we reflect on our rich history and the transformative impact we have made on education and community development. WSU is the product of a merger between the former University of Transkei, founded in 1976, Eastern Cape Technikon, founded in 1985, and Border Technikon, founded in 1988. Our journey has been marked by significant achievements and, as we move forward, our commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and student success remains unwavering. To ensure the long-term sustainability and financial stability of our institution, in April 2024, WSU Council enacted the establishment of the WSU 50 Years Legacy Fund with the main aim of building the university reserves. Our goal is to raise R500,000,000.00 by 2026, when WSU will be celebrating 50 years of existence.
This fund will play a critical role in:
a) Clearing of student debt.
b) Enabling us to continue providing quality education and fostering innovation.
c) Securing financial independence by building solid reserves for WSU.
How do you contribute?
A pledge is submitted to the Fund in writing, and the university Finance Department will provide information on the available modes of payment to the dedicated 50 Years Legacy Fund Account.

WSU Infrastructural Renewal
In 2021, under the leadership of Songca, the university embarked on a full renewal initiative to modernise its facilities and ensure that students have access to state-of-the-art resources. Much has been achieved but a lot still needs to be done, for example WSU’s Library facilities need improvements to align with modern student needs, including compliance with needs of those with special needs.
WSU Recreational Facilities, including Sporting & Student Wellness
With lot of WSU’s focus having been on improving teaching and learning infrastructure, the WSU recreational facilities, especially as it relates to sports and student wellness, has not received similar attention in terms of funding priorities. We call upon Philanthropists, Foundations & other institutions to Partner with us to address these so that our students can enjoy great facilities.
WSU Student Bursaries & Scholarships
As a technology infused African University, strategically positioned in the rural Eastern Cape, WSU services largely students from disadvantaged and needy backgrounds. Student debt, has been and continues to be a sustainability factor for WSU.
Help us through your generous giving, to be in a position to attend to the urgent high student debt clearing so that the WSU can continue to serve this geographical Eastern Cape area!
WSU NO! To Student Hunger Campaign
This campaign aims to address the alarming issue of food insecurity faced by many of our students who are stranded due to funding challenges, with some facing loss of funding. We provide them with food parcels to ensure no student goes hungry. Join us in this vital cause!
