THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION PRESENT ITS RESEARCH AND INNOVATION DAY
Walter Sisulu University’s Faculty of Education held its annual Research and Innovation Day on 05 November 2024, highlighting WSU's commitment to impactful, technology-driven research and producing adaptable, skilled graduates.
The research and innovation day held in the Mthatha campus was themed: “Advancing education through sustainable innovation, community engagement and collaborative research.”
Faculty of Education Executive Dean, Professor Bongani Bantwini said, “Today, we will witness a range of presentations from our own students and staff members, highlighting the diversity and depth of research within our faculty. These projects are not just academic exercises they are meaningful contributions designed to address real-world issues. Through research, we are constantly developing new methods, tools, and approaches that not only enhance learning but also foster resilience and adaptability in our students, who will go on to impact their own communities.”
Bantwini highlighted that for them to achieve sustainable innovation, they must consider not only what they do, but how they do it, focusing on responsible resource use, strategic partnerships, and lasting impact. Community engagement and collaborative research ensure relevance, grounding, and collective progress in education.
Guest speaker and renowned educator, Professor Moeketsi Letseka from the University of South Africa shared insights on educational innovation and community impact.
“We must question whether learning truly serves a purpose in people's lives and contributes to a sustainable future. Education for Sustainable Development holds the key to empowering individuals and societies through knowledge, awareness and action, ultimately transforming lives and securing the planet's survival.” said Letsaka.
Letsaka added that "Education for Sustainable Development extends beyond mere knowledge and awareness of sustainable development facts, aiming to cultivate life skills, competencies, attitudes and values essential for informed decision-making and active participation in practical initiatives that promote sustainable development."
Bantwini concluded by urging participants to make the day a catalyst for new ideas, collaborations, and a shared vision for a sustainable, community-driven, and innovative education system.
The Faculty of Education's Research & Innovation Day sparked meaningful conversations, fostering a sense of community and purpose among educators, researchers, and students. As the faculty continues to push the boundaries of educational excellence, this event serves as a testament to its commitment to transforming lives and communities through sustainable innovation.
