WALTER SISULU UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES PROGRAMME TO SUPPORT ICT STUDENTS

In a bid to assist struggling ICT students, Walter Sisulu University (WSU)  has rolled out an intervention programme to assist them overcome academic challenges and avoid exclusion.

This initiative follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between WSU and the Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority (FASSET) to provide supplementary academic support.

An informative session, attended by faculty deans and Heads of Department (HOD), was held on Friday morning at the WSU Potsdam site with an aim to provide students with comprehensive details about the programme and its benefits.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Wellington Thwala, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology, urged students to dedicate themselves to their studies, attend classes regularly, and aim to complete their degrees in a timely manner.

"It is crucial to complete your studies on time so that WSU can accommodate prospective matriculants, this programme will offer you additional support and mentorship, preparing you for life beyond university,” he said.

Highlighting the expectations of parents and the importance of achieving academic success, Prof. Thwala stressed the significance of students' commitment and sacrifices during their academic journey.

Echoing similar sentiments, Dr. Jose Lukose, HOD of the Department of Business and Applications Development, noted the alarming increase in the number of students facing exclusion.

He outlined the programme's objectives to address the underlying reasons behind poor academic performance.

"There are various factors contributing to students' underperformance, including inadequate preparation from their previous schooling. This programme aims to tackle such challenges," Dr. Lukose explained.

The programme will encompass additional lectures, tutoring sessions, and counseling services for students in need.

Dr. Lukose encouraged students to recognize the value of their education in securing future employment opportunities.

"Our joy comes from your success, and we expect your unwavering commitment in return. With this programme, we aim to ensure that no student faces exclusion," Dr. Lukose added, expressing gratitude to FASSET for their support.

ICT students had the opportunity to seek clarification about the programme during the session, and application forms were distributed to those requiring assistance.

Manyano Vuso, a Level 1 ICT student, expressed appreciation for the session, acknowledging its enlightening nature and the potential benefits it offers.

"I welcome this opportunity as it will help us improve our grades, and it reinforces the notion that learning extends beyond the classroom," Manyano Vuso remarked.

The ongoing programme will continue next week, with representatives from FASSET scheduled to meet with affected students.
