Walter Sisulu University's Student Chapter of the South African Association of Public Administration and Management (SAAPAM) has launched a donation drive to support families affected by recent floods that hit the Mthatha region on 9 June 2025.

SAAPAM is a professional organisation that aims to promote excellence in public administration and management in South Africa.

Maxhobandile Ndamase, a member of SAAPAM and organiser of the donation drive said, “The initiative reflects a deep commitment to bridging the gap between academic excellence and practical service delivery.’’

The floods, which have left a trail of destruction, have displaced thousands of people, with many homes swept away. SAAPAM aims to provide essential items such as food, clothing and blankets which they receive from staff, students and alumni to the affected families.

“The SAAPAM -WSU student chapter was inspired to initiate this donation drive by a shared commitment to public service, and practical learning, as public administration students, we are guided by the principle of Batho Pele, putting people first’’, said Ndamase.

The donation drive has already seen success, with SAAPAM distributing flood relief items to families in Mthatha West's Slovo area. The organisation's dedication to strengthening the role of students in responding to societal challenges is evident in their efforts. Student leaders are working tirelessly to ensure the initiative's success.

“This drive is testament to what young people can do when they are driven by purpose, values, and compassion, we want the community to know that we see them, we hear them, and we are standing with them’’, said Ndamase.

Compassion and kindness can make real difference in times of crisis. The ripple effect of this selfless act will undoubtedly be felt for miles and bring hope.
