“WE ARE PART OF YOU”: VICE-CHANCELLOR LEADS WSU FLOOD RELIEF EFFORT WITH COMPASSION
In a heartfelt response to the devastation caused by the recent Mthatha floods, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca, has stepped forward to lead a university-wide donation drive—anchored in compassion and solidarity with the local community.
The call to action, now gaining momentum across all WSU campuses, urges staff, students, alumni, and the public to donate essential non-perishable items viz; clothes, shoes, tinned- food and blankets.
But beyond logistics, this initiative is deeply personal for Prof. Songca, who sees the university not just as an academic institution, but as a committed member of the Mthatha community.
“What inspired it is the fact that we are part of the Mthatha Community, and we believe that some of the people affected by floods are either our database employees or students,” she said.
She said because the institution is part of the communities regardless, that made them to assist in the manner proposed.
“It's also our way of saying, remember, we are here. We are part of you. So, if you are going through this pain then we are compelled to assist,” she added.
Her words reflect a deeper philosophy of leadership—one rooted in presence, care, and responsibility. Under her guidance, WSU is mobilising more than just resources; it’s mobilising empathy.
The floods, which swept through the Eastern Cape in early June, have left over 100 people dead, with several still missing. Thousands have been displaced as homes, schools, roads and clinics were washed away by raging waters.
The scale of the disaster prompted President Cyril Ramaphosa to visit Mthatha, where he described the scene as one of the worst natural disasters in the province’s recent history. A national state of disaster was subsequently declared, with the president highlighting climate change as a key driver of the catastrophe.
Drop-off points have been established across WSU campuses which are the Marketing and Communication Directorate offices. For Mthatha campus- Nonkululeko Nokwali, Butterworth Campus- Akhona Nodangala, Buffalo City Campus – Sisipho Qwenga at the Potsdam site and Berea office its Zanele Ndzwanana.
. Donations can be made via electronic transfer to our FNB cheque account, number 62522620493. Please include your name or organisation as a reference
As the university continues to support those affected including students and staff, Prof. Songca’s message is clear: WSU stands in solidarity with the people of Mthatha, not just in words, but in action.
