WSU CELEBRATES ITS WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP

The Walter Sisulu University Directorate of Learning and Teaching held a women empowerment Extended Curriculum Program event on Tuesday, 9 August 2022.

National Women’s Day calls upon all to join in the celebration of all social, economic, political, and cultural achievements of women across all nations.

The event which was held at the Mthatha campus was aimed at celebrating women in leadership especially within the WSU community.

Extended Curricula Programs Manager, Dorris Mnengi-Gwevu said, “The Extended Curricula Programs is intended to provide student with opportunity to connect, have fun and generate knowledge through engagement.”

Staff members and students from the University’s various campuses were graced with the presence of WSU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Songca, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic affairs & Research, Professor Mashudu Davhana-Maselesele, and DLT Senior Director, Professor Clever Ndebele amongst other leaders who came together to commemorate the day.

The event which was themed ‘access for success’ focused more on women who, as first of their kind, managed to earn achievements. A number of iconic women were remembered for their brilliance and excellence in the different spheres they occupy, past and present.

Amongst those celebrated women, our very own Professor Rushiella Songca was acknowledged as she is the first female Vice-Chancellor to lead WSU.

It was fun and games as those in attendance engaged in playful activities and painting. The festivities started with a sack game which resulted in the one who makes it to the finish line having to choose which first female icon their group will paint and present.

All nine groups that were created on the day took part in this activity and then later presented their icons to the other groups. This was followed by a debate discussion on new topics to engage the house and get other people’s views about certain issues.

All transpired in sweet educational harmony and was concluded by Prof. Songca as she touched upon the transformation of the black child.

“Let’s show the world that we can be better people, some people have kind of written us off but let us show them we can do better,” said Professor Songca.
