WSU FC WELCOMES 12 NEW PLAYERS FOR THE SEASON

Walter Sisulu University Football Club has officially announced the signing of 12 new players into the team in preparation for the forthcoming 2021/2022 O.R. Tambo regional league.

WSU Football Club announced on Thursday, 30 September 2021 at the Nelson Mthatha campus the welcoming of the new players.

WSU FC Chairman, Siyabulela Tshangela said: “We are extremely proud to be part of O.R. Tambo regional league, we worked tirelessly to be promoted to this division.”

He further added that it is their third season competing at this level and they have had tough times in the 2018/2019 season because they were in relegation zone for the entire season. In the 2020/2021 season they improved because of lessons learnt previously and did not fight relegation.

Head Coach, Samkelo Shibe said; “We singed 12 new players this season and they are all still very young and vibrant. In the previous season we did not do well as we wanted and some of things that affected us was the little time we had with the players.”

Shibe further stated that the reason why they went for young starts was that they are still in first year and their trainings will not be affected by students having to go away for their school practicals.

WSU FC captain, Siphesihle Dambuza said; “I just want to promise our coach that this season we will take the first position he wants us to take and my vision is for us to play in the Motsepe League.

WSU FC’s newly signed striker, Elihle Phathekile (20) said; “This is an achievement to me, it means my football career is growing and my previous coaches in Flagstaff will be proud of my growth, and I plan to contribute a few goals in this season.”

The team has also signed its youngest player, Mava Sirunu (17) who is a grade 11 pupil at Holy Cross High School.

“It is my first time to be the youngest in the team and that comes with a lot of pressure people expect me to more active in the field than others but I am up for the challenge,” said Sirunu.

Sirunu also added that he is proud of his football growth at a young age, and playing for WSU while still in high school is the biggest highlight of his career so far.
