WSU TAKES BOLD STEP TOWARDS GLOBAL RELEVANCE
In a significant move to elevate its brand on the international stage, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has embarked on a strategic journey to position itself for global relevance. While internationalisation has long been a key focus for higher education institutions, WSU is intensifying efforts to expand its reach, build new relationships, and explore lucrative opportunities that will enhance its financial sustainability.
A high-level WSU delegation, led by Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Institutional Support & Development, Sinethemba Mpambane, recently participated in the Applied Higher Education Xchange 2025 in Indonesia. This prestigious gathering was co-hosted by Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta and featured a series of insightful discussions and interactive workshops designed to foster synergy between education and industry.
The third day of the conference, held on Tuesday, 25 February 2025, marked the peak of the agenda, featuring country reports and thought-provoking discussions on the future of higher education.
During the session titled "Education Policy: The Future of HE Learning," Prof. Kevin Downing from City University of Hong Kong provided a comprehensive overview of China's adaptive higher education policies in response to global changes. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Fitria Rahmawati S.Si., M.Si., Vice Chancellor for Academic and Research at UNS, highlighted Indonesia's innovative approaches in integrating technology-driven research and learning.
"Indonesian higher education is committed to continuing to innovate and adapt through close collaboration with industry as well as the adoption of modern technology and teaching methods. This transformation aims to ensure graduates are ready to face global challenges and meet the needs of the job market," stated Prof. Fitria.
Representing WSU, Mpambane shared insights on the challenges faced by higher education institutions in South Africa and the remarkable strides made by WSU to overcome them. His presentation underscored the university’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and sustainable development.
Adding to the discourse, Prof. Dr. Tirta Mursitama, Deputy Minister of Indonesian Investment Cooperation, emphasised the critical role of collaboration between higher education institutions and investment sectors in driving economic growth.
WSU’s active participation in such a high-profile global event signals a new era for the university—one focused on international reach and global relevance. As WSU continues to expand its horizons, the institution remains steadfast in its mission to deliver excellence in education and research while creating opportunities that will strengthen its position on the world stage.
WSU’s participation in this global forum yielded fruitful engagements, strengthening its ties with Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) in Indonesia, City University of Hong Kong, and Sunway University in Malaysia. These new strategic relationships will play a vital role in advancing WSU’s global positioning efforts, enhancing its research collaborations, and improving its international university rankings.
Through these global partnerships, WSU is solidifying its reputation as a key player in international academia, ensuring that its students and faculty benefit from increased opportunities, collaborations, and innovative educational practices align with global standards. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in WSU’s journey toward becoming a globally recognised institution.
