WSU VC LEADS BY EXAMPLE AS INSTITUTION’S TOP-RATED RESEARCHER
Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Rushiella Nolundi Songca, is the leading National Research Foundation (NRF) rated researcher amongst the university's team of top researchers.
The NRF is key in developing and implementing policies and strategies that foster a research-friendly environment, promote international collaboration, and build research capacity in various countries.
By supporting research and innovation, the NRF aims to contribute to economic growth, improve quality of life, and address global challenges like climate change, healthcare, and sustainable development.
Prof. Songca emphasized that WSU's Vision 2030, which focuses on excellence in Teaching and Learning (TnL), Community Engagement (CE), research, and innovation, is complemented by a thorough review of policies and frameworks.
This vision was followed by engagements across various forums within the institution to emphasize the importance of being NRF-rated.
She highlighted that the initiative was not merely about achieving high ratings such as A, B, or C, but about embracing scrutiny and showcasing the university's capabilities.
“Collective effort, library encouraging researchers to have ORCID addresses as part of preparing themselves for rating - including other research platforms like Google Scholar and ResearchGate, and appointing an NRF-rated researcher (externally) to assist researchers in getting ready for rating,” she said.
Through faculty strategic plans, Prof. Songca detailed that NRF development plans are being crafted to target researchers who have recently obtained their PhDs.
The plans include monitoring their progress and providing the necessary support to prepare them for NRF rating. This initiative also extends to researchers up for re-rating, ensuring they receive all the support they need.
“Of importance, is to map out the trajectory of our rating history from 2019 to date, in terms of numbers, and state that we will extend our efforts in identifying researchers and providing resources to help them obtain or move to other categories such as A, B, and P ratings,” she said.
Prof. Joseph Olorunfemi Akande, honored as a C2 category researcher by the NRF, remarked that this recognition marks a significant milestone in his academic career, highlighting his sustained productivity and the impact of his research within the field of Finance and Accounting.
“Being rated as an established researcher not only affirms my dedication to high-quality research but also enhances my responsibility towards contributing constructively to the academic community,” he said.
He added that this accolade would undoubtedly open new avenues for collaboration and further research opportunities, allowing him to continue making meaningful contributions to their understanding of complex finance and accounting issues.
“I am grateful to God and WSU for providing the platform for this recognition and motivated to maintain the high standards expected of NRF-rated researchers,” he added.
This leadership and recognition exemplify WSU's commitment to advancing research and achieving excellence in various academic disciplines, setting a benchmark for future achievements and contributions to global knowledge.
