Walter Sisulu University (WSU) alumni and studentpreneurs were given an invaluable platform on Wednesday, 22 October, to pitch their innovative and dynamic business ideas during the Entrepreneurship Competition Day, an initiative championed by the institution’s Alumni Relations Office (ARO).
Since its launch earlier this year, the ARO has been instrumental in implementing impactful programmes aimed at strengthening alumni engagement and supporting student development. One of its hallmark events was the WSU Alumni Reunion Lunch hosted at the Butterworth Campus, which successfully raised funds to assist the university in various initiatives.
Proceeds from that event were used to fund the R50 000 cash prize awarded to the winners of the Entrepreneurship Competition — a gesture that reflects the ARO’s commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment within the WSU community.
A diverse range of business ideas was passionately presented by at least five participants, each representing different industries and approaches. These included ventures focused on online study materials, a digital platform for buying and selling goods, a courier company, and sustainable food production, among others. The competition not only provided contestants with financial rewards but also exposure to potential collaborators, mentors, and investors, positioning them for future growth. It stands as a testament to WSU’s dedication to empowering its students and alumni to become drivers of innovation and social change.
