The purpose of the Bachelor of Accounting Honours is to develop learners with an increased measure of intellectual independence through an advanced level of theoretical and practical engagement with accountancy concepts. The qualification aims to prepare learners for research-based postgraduate study in Accountancy by including a discrete research component in the curriculum. It further aims to consolidate and deepen the learner's knowledge and expertise relating to advanced contemporary accounting theories and practices and to develop appropriate applied competencies to meet the need of the South African economy for well-qualified and competent accountancy practitioners and businesspeople.

Prospective students must hold an undergraduate bachelor qualification (or an equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification) in Accounting, such as:

Advanced Diploma in Accounting
OR
Bachelor of Accounting
OR
Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting

Teaching and learning activities are structured such that they are centred around the student and enable the student to drive their own learning. The strategy is largely informed and aligned with the competencies as per the SAICA CA of the Future competency framework. The focus is on the student learning experiences and opportunities are created for development via feedback. Students must be prepared to work independently using their own initiatives to develop the ability to reason methodically and think critically.

Students are assessed using a variety of assessments mix and tools. This comes in the form of objective tests, assignments, group projects, formal term tests and summative examinations at the end of each semester.

Students must pass a sufficient number of modules to obtain a minimum level of credits per year as per the department and university progression rules.

Prior learning shall be recognised subject to the requirements of each programme as per WSU’s Recognition of Prior Learning Policy (RPL)
