Department Overview (HOD). Department of Networking and Information Technology
The Department of Networking and IT Support in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (FEBEIT) is a forward-thinking academic home for students pursuing careers in one of the most dynamic and influential fields of our time. Information Technology has become central to innovation, public service delivery, business operations, and everyday life. Our role is to prepare students to thrive in this rapidly evolving digital landscape by providing programmes that are relevant, future-focused, and aligned with both national priorities and global industry standards.
Information Technology is a driving force behind organisational efficiency, digital transformation, and economic growth. Students in our department gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to become competent ICT professionals capable of contributing to any technology-infused enterprise. Through accredited undergraduate qualifications and a wide range of short learning programmes, we develop graduates who are adaptable, solution-driven, and prepared to meet the demands of a competitive global workforce.
The department’s academic and development activities are rooted in excellence in teaching and learning, research, and community engagement. Our major Research Niche Area, ICT for Sustainable Development, guides impactful work in areas such as ICT in education, e-agriculture, e-health, e-governance, and e-commerce. These research efforts empower students and staff to explore digital solutions that address societal challenges and contribute to sustainable national development.
Rapid advancements in ubiquitous computing and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) have positioned computing technology as an integral part of modern living. With constant innovation in networking, cybersecurity, software development, and data communication, the demand for skilled ICT professionals continues to rise worldwide. Graduates from our programmes enter fields such as programming, network engineering, cybersecurity, systems analysis and design, and technical support. The growing digital economy also presents strong entrepreneurial opportunities for those aspiring to develop ICT services or launch technology-based enterprises, particularly within South Africa’s expanding SMME sector.
Students in the department experience a learning environment designed to be both rigorous and rewarding. Our team of dedicated academics and professional support staff is committed to student success, guided by the values of Honesty and Integrity, Quality and Excellence, Respect, and Ubuntu. These principles shape our educational approach and ensure that diplomates and graduates leave not only with strong technical capabilities but also with the character and confidence to make a positive impact in their communities.
