Meet the staff: Visual Arts
Sonwabiso Ngcai Ngcai was in born and raised in Buntingville, a rural village outside a small town called Ngqeleni, near Mthatha in Eastern Cape, South Africa. Sonwabiso holds a Fine Art Masters from the Vaal University of Technology. He specializes in ceramic sculptural installations. Sonwabiso is currently lecturing at Fine Art at Walter Sisulu University, Visual Arts Department in East London, where he also lives. Over the years, Sonwabiso participated in numerous national art competitions, with his first accolade being PPC Imaginarium (sculpture category runner-up) in 2017. Sonwabiso was selected as PPC Imaginarium 2019 Overall winner. He received a Merit Award in Ceramic South Africa Eastern Cape Regionals in 2021. In April 2022, Sonwabiso held his first commercial solo exhibition titled Nkomoni na? at GFI Art Gallery in Gqeberha. In June 2022, He was invited as a guest lecturer to run a three-week ceramics silkscreen print workshop at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. Sonwabiso has been involved in art-related adjudication panels, including being appointed as an Award Judge for Ceramic South Africa Corobrik Biennale 2022. Sonwabiso received a top award for Excellence at the 2022 Ceramic South Africa Regional Exhibition. In 2025, he was awarded 2 Units for his creative output submission, Nkomoni Na?. He also had a solo exhibition at The National Arts Festival in Makhada. |

Demonstrated expertise in curriculum development, student mentorship, industry collaboration, and academic administration. Proven track record of fostering creative talent while trying to maintain strong connections with the fashion industry to ensure graduates are well-prepared for contemporary design challenges.
