Department Overview (HOD). Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Mr. Zamile Mpeta

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, where we are committed to developing highly employable, technically skilled, and industry-ready graduates. Our programmes are fully accredited by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), ensuring that the qualifications we offer meet national and international standards for professional engineering practice. This accreditation strengthens our graduates’ career prospects and supports their eligibility for professional registration.

Mechanical Engineering is one of the most versatile engineering disciplines, and our graduates are consistently employed in sectors such as power generation, manufacturing, automotive and aerospace engineering, mining, renewable energy, and industrial automation. Employers value our graduates for their strong technical grounding, practical competence, and ability to apply engineering principles confidently in real-world environments.

Our curriculum integrates essential engineering sciences with advanced topics in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, machine design, materials engineering, and industrial automation. Students gain extensive hands-on experience through well-equipped laboratories and workshops, as well as through Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), which connects them directly with industry. This combination of theory, practical training, and workplace exposure ensures that our graduates are prepared to contribute meaningfully from the start of their careers.

Research and innovation are central to our department’s identity. Our Friction Stir Welding (FSW) Research Platform supports advanced materials and manufacturing research, providing opportunities for students to participate in cutting-edge projects and to collaborate with industry partners. Through strong collaborations with institutions such as Stellenbosch University, Nelson Mandela University, the University of Johannesburg, and the CSIR, we continue to strengthen our academic excellence and research capacity.

We are proud to nurture future engineers who demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, innovation, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Whether you aspire to design advanced mechanical systems, drive industrial innovation, or contribute to national development, the Department of Mechanical Engineering provides the foundation for a successful and impactful career.
