Department Overview (HOD). Department of Built Environment
Prof. Xolile Nokulunga Mashwama
The Department of Built Environment plays a vital role in developing skilled, ethical, and industry-ready construction professionals who contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s growth and infrastructure development. Rooted in Walter Sisulu University’s mission to advance technology-driven and socially responsive education, the department offers programmes that are closely aligned with national priorities and the evolving needs of the construction and property sectors.
Our qualifications are fully accredited by the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) and the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP), ensuring that our students graduate with industry-recognised credentials that support professional registration and long-term career mobility.
The Diploma in Building Technology—offered both as a mainstream and extended programme—equips students with strong technical, managerial, and problem-solving competencies across Construction Management, Construction Technology, and Quantity Surveying. Through a blend of classroom learning, laboratory and field activities, and a compulsory Work Integrated Learning (WIL) period, students gain practical experience that enhances employability and prepares them for the demands of professional practice.
Graduates are well positioned for employment in construction companies, quantity surveying practices, consulting firms, government departments, and material or equipment suppliers. Many also pursue entrepreneurial ventures within the construction and property sectors, supported by the department’s focus on business awareness, innovation, and community upliftment.
The Department maintains partnerships with key institutions—including the Council for the Built Environment, Construction CETA, and various municipalities—to strengthen research output, expand training opportunities, and support community development initiatives. Staff and students contribute to research, capacity building, and professional engagement activities aimed at advancing the Built Environment discipline.
Through responsive curricula, committed academic staff, and a strong culture of applied learning, the Department of Built Environment continues to produce graduates who are prepared to lead, innovate, and transform the construction industry at regional and national levels.
