“IPHUPHA ALINCANYWA” – SAYS WSU JOURNALISM GRADUATE ON HIS APPOINTMENT TO NATIONAL RADIO

King Mfundisi 2

After years of knocking in on big industry doors, WSU journalism graduate, Nkosihleli Mfundisi, has joined uMhlobo Wenene FM as a current affairs producer and stand-in presenter.

The Tsolo born, radio presenter, popularly known as “King Mfundisi”, worked at one of East London’s community radio stations, Kumkani FM, where his talent for the airwaves was honed.

Mfundisi has also lent his talents to the entertainment industry outside the province, where he had the opportunity to be one of the guests at Soweto TV, as well as SABC shows such as Shift and FAN Base.

“I always say that being rejected doesn't mean you are not worth it. It might happen that it is not yet your time or the person who received your request couldn't pick, that indeed, you deserve to be given a chance. Being positive and consistent in my craft, helped me a lot” said Nkosihleli.

Before venturing into Journalism, Mfundisi worked for a couple of firms, until he resigned at the age of 28 to follow his dreams of becoming a radio personality.

He enrolled at WSU’s Journalism programme, where he obtained a Diploma as well as Advanced Diploma in Journalism.

His first taste of the industry came in 2018 while he did his first year in Journalism. He joined Kumkani FM as a volunteer broadcaster.

In his pursuit of a gig in national radio, Mfundisi has entered competitions like the Tru FM talent search, in which was not successful.

"I have always told myself that iphupha alincanywa (you do not give up on your dreams). Talent alone is not enough. It doesn't matter how old you are, or how much time has passed, as long as you keep making decisions that will eventually change your life. Go back to school, move with humility, and always be careful of what you post on social media, especially if you want to work in the media. Most importantly, stay positive, because your situation and your background may be changed by you," said Mfundisi.

Mfundisi leaves Kumkani FM as the host of their afternoon drive show, Hustlers Drive, which he hosted  from Monday to Friday 15:00.

On his departure, Kumkani FM station manager Alime Dyubula wrote: “Kumkani FM board, management and staff members at large is proud of you. Your discipline and commitment have borne you the fruits. Continue doing us proud, we love you.”
