NGOBENI PHD RECITAL SHOWCASES VOCAL MASTERY AND ARTISTIC DEDICATIONThe Nelson Mandela Drive Auditorium echoed with the rich tones from Department of Humanities and Creative Arts music lecturer, Nyiko Ngobeni’s voice as he took the stage for his first recital as part of his academic journey to obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy in Music.

“The recital is a culmination of my artistic journey and academic endeavors, it showcases my interpretative skills, vocal techniques, and understanding of diverse musical styles. This performance marks a milestone in my PhD studies and enhances my professional profile as a performer and educator,” said Ngobeni.

The Oppenheimer scholar recited a strand of classical compositions with Rhodes University music Professor Cathrine Foxtrot, who showcased her virtuosic piano technique, leaving the audience in awe.

Amongst the pieces performed were the German Lider Six Songs from Schwanengesang by Franz Schubert, Trois Mélodies De Verlaine by Debussy, 36 Arie di Stile Antico by Stefano Donaudy, and English art song by Aaron Copoland.

“My PhD journey involves rigorous academic research, extensive practice, and performance. It includes coursework, comprehensive exams, and a dissertation focused on vocal pedagogy and performance practice. Additionally, I am engaged in recitals and teaching, which enrich my research and practical experience.”

In 2023, Ngobeni had the honour of performing a harmonious opera piece at the 2023 African Growth and Opportunity Act Forum hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the Joburg Expo Centre.

“It was truly a special honour to be part of such a significant occasion and sharing the stage with such respected delegates was a dream come true. The experiences continue to inspire and drive my passion for music to new heights,” said Ngobeni.

Ngobeni’s national career highlights range from 2010 when he performed in the Hansel and Gratel play and later Petitte Messe solennele, Magic flute Opera, Mozart Requiem, 2 Don Giovanni opera, and Messe solennele by Gounod, at Tshwane University of Technology.

After four years of gracing the university’s stage, Ngobeni took to the international stage in 2016 to perform Ogre from El Gato con Botas by Montsalvatge Operahub, in Boston, USA.

His latest international performance was in 2017 when he performed Dr Miracle by Offenbach from Les Contes D'hoffmann with Longy Opera School, Cambridge, USA

“I advise aspiring musicians to be persistent, passionate, and dedicated. Embrace every learning opportunity, seek mentorship, and continually refine your craft. Remember, success in music requires a balance of talent, hard work, and resilience.”

The singer attained his Master of Music Degree in Performance from Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, under the mentorship of Robert Honeysucker.

He is currently pursuing his PhD through Rhodes University.
