A Master of Economics candidate, in the Department of Economics and Financial Sciences, Cebo Mawindi, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious Nedbank Budget Speech Competition that kickstarted in 2023.
The Nedbank Budget Speech Competition stands as one of the most prestigious platforms for students to showcase their insights and perspectives on critical economic issues facing South Africa.
“This is a huge platform for me to express my views concerning the economic policies, ideas, and strategies which are being implemented in South Africa. I am very excited to be part of this competition and I’m looking forward to presenting my ideas in front of judges, competitors, investors, and ministers,” said Mawindi.
The 29-year-old from Mqanduli, in Mthatha will be among 10 post-graduate students from various universities in the country who will be addressing pressing economic challenges concerning the ‘Just Energy Transition' launched by Eskom in 2020, which seeks to achieve a cleaner and greener energy future by 2050.
The current year's competition has brought focus to the significant theme: "What is your view of the 'Just Energy Transition'? Discuss the potential impact on the SA economy. Is this a game-changer that will support future growth, or is it another plan doomed to fail?"
“It is important to engage with these economic issues, you will learn a lot from them, and it will boost the level of understanding and knowledge, and their ideas will contribute to the existing literature and policies of South Africa,” said Mawindi.
According to Department of Economics and Financial Sciences Head, Vikela Sithole, Mawindi's selection as a finalist underscores, not only his academic prowess but also their ability to engage with contemporary issues critically.
“This is a remarkable achievement that reflects not only Mawindi's dedication and hard work but also the high caliber of education and guidance provided by our esteemed faculty. It is also a testament to the excellence fostered within WSU’s academic community.”
