WSU RESTORES ITS DIGNITY THROUGH NEWLY RECONSTRUCTED RESIDENCES

Walter Sisulu University Mthatha Campus is in the process of refurbishing a six-block structure boasting four (4) residence sections that accommodate 704 beds and two sections reserved as common areas at Zamukulungisa site.

The project kick-started in March of 2022 as part of the efforts to revitalise student residences in the university.

WSU Project Manager, Thandile Konjwa said, “Internal spaces have been altered completely to create multiple pods with shared facilities such as bathrooms, kitchens and pods that mimic a family setup which students will resonate better with.”

She added, “New social spaces have also been introduced to the building which include   refurbished kitchen and canteen that will continue to service the students, study areas and a discussion room.”

Meanwhile, the bedrooms have been fitted complete with a student bed, study desk & lamp, a chair, a bookshelf, a mirror, and a multi-function cabinet.

Speaking at the university’s opening address on Friday, January 27th,  WSU Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof Rushiella Songca said that these refurbishments were part of the university’s initiative to restore its dignity and that of its students.

“We are unapologetic about our efforts to prioritise our students by providing them with suitable and conducive facilities. It is very important to show our students that we value and respect them,” she said.

The team has completed several projects towards this vision, including an IT Hub, Teaching Malls at the Nelson Mandela Drive Site, Clinical Skills Simulation Lab at the NMD Site, Marine Biology, and Pollution Lab at the NMD Site, New residence at Butterworth Campus, and a Lecture Hall at Ibika Campus.
