SAICA ENDORSEMENT OPENS NEW PATHWAY FOR ASPIRING CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS

The South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA) endorsement of the Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting at Walter Sisulu signals a turning point in transforming access to the Chartered Accountancy profession in the Eastern Cape.

Walter Sisulu Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandi Mgwebi described the endorsement as a major achievement in the University’s journey of transformation, to develop ethical and globally competitive Chartered Accountants.

She said the University must also consider how graduates can become leaders across business, government, academia, entrepreneurship and public institutions while contributing to the communities from which they come.

Mgwebi linked the accounting profession to the University’s broader strategic priorities, highlighting the role of accountants in strengthening institutional accountability, responsible decision-making and ethical leadership. She also pointed to the growing impact of technology, artificial intelligence, data analytics and automation on the profession.

Addressing the inaugural cohort of 45 PGDA students, Mgwebi described them as the first fruits of the SAICA endorsement and challenged them to become ethical leaders, nation-builders and change agents. [

“The full South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA) endorsement affirms the quality of the PGDA’s curriculum, while completing the academic pathway for accounting students at Walter Sisulu,” said Mgwebi.

She said the pathway enables students to progress from a BCom in Accounting Sciences to the PGDA at Walter Sisulu and become eligible to write the Initial Test of Competence without having to leave the province.

“The achievement must translate into meaningful opportunities for young people in the Eastern Cape. Beyond celebrating the endorsement, the university must ask how many Chartered Accountants can emerge from the region, how many young people can begin to see the CA(SA) profession as attainable,” said Mgwebi.

SAICA Chief Executive Officer, Patricia Stock CA(SA) described the endorsement as a turning point in expanding access to the Chartered Accountancy profession.

Stock said the achievement represents more than a qualification, creating a complete academic pathway for talented young people who may previously have faced geographical and financial barriers to pursuing the CA(SA) route.

“Talent is spread evenly across South Africa, but opportunity is not. Universities, professional bodies and partners are key in creating pathways that enable young people from different communities to realise their potential,” said Stock.

She said transformation without quality is not transformation, outlining SAICA’s rigorous endorsement process, which assessed curriculum alignment, academic governance, assessment and quality, and student support.

The programme is supported by SAICA, the Finance and Accounting Services Sector Education and Training Authority (FASSET), Tutuka and KPMG, whose collaboration has contributed to its establishment and development.
