Walter Sisulu University's esteemed Accounting lecturer, Dr Zikhona Seleke, has made a significant contribution to the academic landscape with her latest involvement in a newly released book titled Metacognition in Learning - New Perspectives.
Seleke contributed a book chapter offering crucial insights into the ever-evolving field of accounting through the chapter titled Technology Enhanced Learning In The Teaching And Learning Of Accounting In Secondary Schools, South Africa.
“The significance of ICT in teaching lies not just in the delivery of information, but in its ability to transform how students learn and comprehend complex concepts. Its integration fosters an environment that aligns with the demands and dynamics of 21st-century learning. Incorporating metacognition in the adoption of ICT for teaching can significantly enhance the learning process,” said Seleke.
Seleke added that by integrating metacognition into the adoption of ICT for teaching, one does not just teach the subject matter, but also empowers students with the skills to learn effectively. She also added that it's about making them conscious of their learning processes, allowing them to adapt and improve their learning strategies continuously.
“As an accounting lecturer in the university, with 13 years’ experience of teaching Accounting in grade 12 under the Department of Basic Education, when teaching accounting, the design of the curriculum becomes critical. Integrating metacognitive practices within the coursework can help students become more independent and self-regulated learners,” said Seleke.
Seleke added that discussions, either in person or through online forums, can encourage students to articulate their problem-solving strategies. This helps them not only understand the accounting concepts better, but also become more aware of their cognitive processes in approaching these problems.
“In essence, in the book chapter the massage I wanted to convey to teachers and students is that integrating ICT metacognition creates a more holistic approach to learning. It empowers students not just with accounting knowledge but also with the skills to learn effectively and independently,” added Seleke.
She concluded that the future of research and practice in ICT within accounting education lies in continuously evolving with technological advancements, catering to the ever-changing needs of the accounting profession, and ensuring that students are well-prepared for the digital landscape they'll encounter in their careers.Top of Form
